Substitute teacher Barbara Reed knows better than to say the word “perfect.” Using the P-word is a sure way to jinx romance, finance, and circumstance.

Despite a chronic shortage of funds, things are looking up for Barb after the events of NO SUBSTITUTE FOR MURDER. She’s completing grad school and hoping for a job at Captain Meriwether High School in Reckless River, Washington. Her drug-cop boyfriend, Dave Martin, wants to move in and his daughter is all in favor. Even Barb’s spoiled dog Cheese Puff has no objections—undaunted by size, he’s infatuated with Dave’s partner Lola, a drug-sniffing Golden Retriever.

Then Dave uses the P-word. And Barb’s luck leaves town.

Her car breaks down, her domineering sister comes for a visit, the condo manager plots to ban dogs, her jailed ex-husband begs her to be a character witness at his trial, a computer hacker creates chaos at the high school, and a hulking thug threatens violence.

Just when it appears things can’t get worse, Lola sniffs out a package in her car and a drug dealer decides Barb and Cheese Puff are his tickets out of trouble.

This is the second book in this series that I have read and I have to say that I did enjoy it. It didn't blow me away either, it's a solid story but to me it just seems to be missing something and I can't quite put my finger on what that is yet. Barbara is a smart funny woman who substitutes at a high school, but trouble and danger seems to find her in some quirky fashion or another. Meanwhile the most interesting thing so far that I have found is her dog Cheesepuff, who seems to have a better social life than her or anyone else for that matter. And the author does a good job of showing his personality. I'm on to book 3 so I'm hoping it gets a lot more exciting. If you're looking for a book just to pass the time then I recommend this. This was a good follow-up to No Substitute for Murder. Who knew being a substitute teacher was so cutthroat? I was glad all the old characters were still in the picture and to see how far Dave and Barbara 's relationship had progressed. The auto repair shop sideline was a nice touch. Makes me wonder what the mechanics are doing with my car when it's out of sight out of mind. A very enjoyable read.
No Substitute for Money is an enjoyable, light-hearted mystery. The story pulled me along. Like all of Ms. Rose books, I found myself saying "I'll read just one more chapter before I put the book down" well into the evening. The people, pets, and villains were outrageous, but believable. I liked the way the author use foreshadowing to help me guess what was going on around the protagonist before she did. This was a fun read that I highly recommend.
Ah, this mystery is going to the dogs. Okay, not really, but the dogs are there. So, of course, is the substitute teacher and her falling apart car. And, of course, there's a perplexing mystery with danger afoot.
As a recently retired teacher who has worked mainly as a fully employed teacher, but also experienced the world of 'subbing', I loved this book. Its portrayal of schools is realistic, and our heroine is delightful. The book provides a wonderful combination of 'whodunit' features, quirky comedy and likeable characters including the cat. The mystery plot and its clues are also clever.
For anyone who enjoys mysteries in the 'cozy' genre, I highly recommend this one for a relaxing bedtime read.
I am reading this delightful series by Carolyn Rose. Ms Rose and I live in the same town and I love the local references. Love, love, love her character Barbara and all the characters surrounding Barbara. I felt like it took a really long time for the mystery to be revealed in this story but I loved what was going on in Barbara's mind while I was waiting for the mystery to unfold. Great story....I ordered the 3rd book in the series and am looking forward to another great adventure with Barbara. Hope Ms Rose will continue to expand on this series.
The book has an effective blend of humor and mystery, and is light enough on the romance elements that they do not get in the way of the story. It has some improbable elements (such as the fairy godmother-type neighbor) and a reader should probably like dogs in order to enjoy much of the humor. Some of the supporting characters seemed "over the top" in terms of eccentricities--but I haven't been near a highschool for. . .a very long time, so perhaps basic hygiene for instructors is not expected now.

Reading the first book first will probably enhance this story, but it seems to me to be able to stand alone.
This book is as good as the first. Barbara's new mystery is how to dig her self out of her financial problems as she struggles with the manager where she lives plotting against pets, ex-husband begging her to be a witness for him when he goes to trial, a computer hacker at the high school works at wrecking havoc. Then, topping things off a large man keeps threatening violence and her car breaks down. As in previous books, Cheese Puff is still the star as Barbara has to take a backseat to his adoring fans. He now even has a love interest, the career oriented yet still has that dog-next-door charm, Lola. Barbara is better at sleuthing and Dave, her boyfriend, is still protecting her and hauling in the bad guys. To her benefit, Barbara not only must deal with her love smitten dog, but also her eccentric sister, and Dave's daughter. The secondary characters from the school are also still there and whether helping, hindering, or neither they are all humorous with their... unique personalities. All together, they keep you laughing. It kept me up half the night with romance, mystery, and humor.
